Posted by mtgmathtrail on September 4, 2009

As the Philippine International Mathematics Competitions (PIMC) 2009 draws nearer, the MTG, Philippines and Collins International Trading Corporation have forged agreement for this years’ conduct of SHARP-MTG Math Trail Problem Solving Competition. This time the said competition will be a basis to choose official participants for the parallel national math contest of the 2009 Asian Inter-cities Teenagers Mathematics Olympiad (AITMO) and 2009 Philippine Elementary Mathematics International Competition (PEMIC). The good news is the organizers of the SHARP-MTG Math Trail Problem Solving Competition will now conduct national finals on November 30, 2009 at Iloilo City.

Accordingly, every first two winning teams in the high school level, that is, the 1st place and 2nd place winners in every region will compete in the national finals of the SHARP-MTG Math Trail Problem Solving Competition and will also represent their region in the parallel national math contest. It should be noted that the parallel national math contest is a math competition with national participants but international in character and nature because its rules, award system and contest problems are those of 2009 AITMO and 2009 PEMIC. Thus, the 2009 AITMO and 2009 PEMIC have two identities, firstly, it is an international math competition in which Philippines will have some teams to compete with the international teams and secondly, a parallel math competition will be conducted where the participants are mostly Filipino and some foreign math wizards who will be competing.

However, every participating elementary school can send two (2) grade 5 and two (2) grade 6 pupils as its entry in the SHARP-MTG Math Trail Problem Solving Competition. Elementary school participants will be given math problems to be solved using the SHARP Calculator EL123S. And every top two winners in the region are qualified to be in the national finals and at the same time participate in the 2009 PEMIC.

Therefore, all interested private and public elementary and secondary schools are invited to join and register in the SHARP-MTG Math Trail and Problem Solving Contest. The minimal registration fee of Php.50.00 per participant shall be collected for the contest material expenses. The deadline of registration is five days prior the contest schedule date.

The temporary Regional Math Trail schedules are as follow:

  • September 17, 18, 19 2009
  • September 24, 25, 26 2009
  • October 1, 2, 3 2009

Mechanics of the SHARP-MTG Math Trail and Problem Solving Contest will be sent upon request.
